Using CICS/NEWS With FRS
Introduction to CICS/NEWS
CICS/NEWS allows you to broadcast NEWS to all or selected CICS users when they sign on to CICS. NEWS is also available throughout the day by entering a CICS transaction (the transaction is 'NEWS').NEWS can be generated for broadcast to all CICS users, to selected gropus of users, or to an individual user. NEWS can be directed to CICS users by Operator ID, User ID, or Terminal ID.
NEWS can be one full screen (19 lines of 79 characters each). HELP screens are available throughout the system whether creating, changing, or just reading NEWS. Only those authorized can create NEWS items.
The most current NEWS is always displayed first, but the user is then free to browse forward or backward chronologically through NEWS that (s)he is authorized to read. The reader can go directly to NEWS of a specified date or to the oldest or newest (most current) NEWS.
Further information about the use of CICS/NEWS can be obtained from the CICS MORNING NEWS Installation Guide and User Manual.
Displaying CICS/NEWS Items
News items that are active and available to the individual user are automatically displayed when the user signs on to CICS. In addition, the CICS transaction 'NEWS' can be executed to redisplay NEWS items from within CICS after exiting from the initial NEWS display. For example, the user may want to redisplay NEWS items at the end of the day after exiting the FRS application. Just before signing off from CICS, the user can redisplay NEWS by executing the transaction 'NEWS'.Policies For Using CICS/NEWS With FRS
CICS/NEWS will be used with the FRS system primarily to notify users of system unavailability due to month-end processing or emergency system maintenance. It can, however, be used to advise users of any general information pertinent to the FRS system. The following general policies have been adopted for using CICS/NEWS with the FRS system.- CICS/NEWS is activated automatically when the user signs on to the FRS CICS region.
- FRS NEWS items are targeted to ALL AUTHORIZED FRS users by using the routing group ‘@FRS’.
- NEWS items are normally displayed to users for two working days; i.e. they are activated one working day prior to the event that they address. Longer activation periods may be appropriate but but these should be usedjudiciously to limit the impact on users when they sign onto CICS.
- NEWS items are to be created in the standard format shown in the sample NEWS items below.
Sample CICS/NEWS Items For FRS
There are three basic types of FRS NEWS items which can be displayed. The first type is used to advise users of the current month-end processing schedule. The second type is simply a general message which may be of interest to all FRS users, while the third type is used to advise users of FRS unavailability due to system maintenance (usually of an emergency nature). These sample messages are shown below:CICS/NEWS For Month-End Processing

These forms are to be completed by the FRS System Administrator and submitted to the UITS Scheduling Department for processing.
Guidelines For Completing FRS CICS/NEWS Requests Form
The following guidelines should be considered when completing the appropriate CICS/NEWS request forms and selecting the desired Release and Expiration dates for NEWS items.
Month-End Processing Request
A complete set of four month-end processing request forms should be submitted each year in June to reflect the month-end and year-end processing schedule for the upcoming fiscal year.
The FRS month-end processing event always takes place on the first business day of the month, unless the first business day is a Friday, in which case the month-end processing event takes place on the second business day of the month (The Computer Center is not fully staffed over the weekend to support an extended month-end processing schedule on Friday night.)
The Release date for month-end processing NEWS is usually one day working before the event takes place. The Expiration date is normally the date of month-end event at midnight.
The FRS system normally goes offline at 2:00 p.m. on the day of moth-end processing and is back online at approximately 8:00 a.m. the following day.
General Information RequestA general information request form should be submitted whenever a NEWS new item is desired.
When selecting the desired Release and Expiration dates for the NEWS item, please observe the general policy to limit the activation period for NEWS to not more than a few days unless an extended period is absolutely required.
Type the text of the desired message in the box provided. It should be noted that space on the display screen is limited to six lines, therefore, the desired message should be formatted accordingly.
Submit the request form to the UITS Scheduling Department at least one a week prior to the desired Release date.
